Norman E Petersen

November 28, 1931 — August 2, 2014

Norman Eugene Petersen of Hazelton, Idaho passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. He passed away with his family sitting at his side, singing to him the beautiful hymn of Amazing Grace. Norman was born in Nebraska on November 28, 1931. As a child he moved to California with his family, then to Idaho where he graduated from Kimberly High School in 1949. Norman joined the Navy in 1951 and served for 4 years, spending 2 tours in Japan during the Korean War. Before leaving on his first tour, he met JoAnn Groves, and they were married after a 3-week courtship. They were married 61 years this January. After his time in the military, Norman farmed 400 acres for 35 years in Murtaugh before retiring in Hazelton, Idaho. Norman and JoAnn were members of the Redeemer Lutheran church in Kimberly, where Norman served in many roles and offices. Norman is survived by his wife JoAnn, and his four children Todd Petersen, Julie Fife, Wade Petersen, and Wendy Mason. He enjoyed the blessings of 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bob Petersen, sister Janet Critchett and many nieces & nephews. Norm was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Hazel Petersen and his brother Carl Petersen. Norman never knew a stranger. He was quick to strike up a conversation with just about anyone. His friendly smile and mild-mannered temperament will always be remembered. Norman’s funeral service will be held at Norm and JoAnn’s home church, Redeemer Lutheran, in Kimberly, Idaho, Thursday, August 7, at 10:00 a.m. Any memorials can be made in Norman’s name to Redeemer LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) or to Hospice Visions. Norman’s family would like to thank Dr. Lisa Burgett, the staff at BridgeView Assisted Living, and Hospice Visions for their special care and kindness. Our Beloved Husband, Dad, and Papa—you are so greatly missed!
