Melva May (Messley) Johnson May 9, 1924 - November 26, 2024
Melva Johnson, 100, of Hansen, ID., passed away early Tuesday morning on November 26, 2024 at River Rock Assisted Living in Buhl, ID., with family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, daughter, Joy Youree, 2 sisters, Nadine(Earl) Woodruff and Lorna(Vernon) Strolberg, 2 brothers, Linton(Jewel) Messley and Leman(Inez) Messley, and her parents, Walter and Gladys Messley.
After a journey in a homemade camper pickup from St. Francis, KS, where she was born, the family settled in Buhl, ID, where she grew up, met and married Gene Johnson on March 1, 1946. They farmed with his parents, Joe and Fern Johnson, in the Buhl area before moving, farming, and living in Wendell, Kimberly, and Hansen areas until Gene's death in 1999. Melva was always involved in the farming operations, her children's activities, and her church, OG Kimberly Christian Church, Wendell Presbyterian Church and Buhl First Christian Church. Along with setting irrigations tubes, pulling cockleburs out of the bean field, fixing lunch to take out to the beet field during harvest, there are many memories of on the back porch snapping green beans for canning, learning the fine are of gin playing, discussing who was going to "be" first base at our annual Easter baseball game, picking raspberries, watching the Triple Crown races with raspberry cobbler, listening to the dratted wind chimes during the 3 p.m. coffee break, and getting chewed out for running through her peonies. She loved her garden. The family gatherings on Christmas Eve with movies and presents were especially loud and fun followed by New Year's Eve bowing at the Magic Bowl where she bowled for many years on a morning league. Mom was always our best cheerleader for music, sports, and 4-H projects, whether in the Gooding Count Fair with Jerry and Kenny and their heifers, as co-leader of the Busy Burners cooking and sewing club or the steer and leather projects of the Southhill Sidekicks at the Twin Falls County Fair.
Melva is survived by 1 brother, Lowell Messley, Genessee, ID., 2 sons, Jerry Johnson, Hollister, Kenny Johnson, Buhl, 1 daughter, Holly(Rick) Lee, Hansen, son-in-law Richard Youree, Kimberly, and 9 grandchildren, Scott Youree, Kimberly, Kelly(Robert)Cooke, Nampa, Kody(Monica) Youree Twin Falls, McCaulley(Amy) Johnson, Russellvill, AR, Tucker(Jennifer)Johnson, Buhl, Jodi Martin, Great Falls, MT, Ty(Sasha)Moore, Great Falls, MT, Ryan(Emily)Lee, Madras, OR,and Chad Lee, Kimberly, 18 greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to the River Rock Assisted Living people who cared for her and to Heritage Home and Hospice of Twin Falls. Please remember Mom for her love of God, family, and friends at your 3 p.m. coffee break. Her family memorial service will be held at a later date and under the direction of Rosenau Feneral Home, Twin Falls, ID. "See ya down the road Ma"
