It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Edwin Palmer announce his passing on November 12th, 2024, at the age of 85 in Twin Falls, Idaho. John was born on August 30th, 1939, in Fairplay, Colorado to the late Jeremiah “Jerry” and Pauline (Root) Palmer. He will be dearly missed and remembered by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sharon; their children, Johnna (Ray) and Deena (Walter); grandchildren: Scotty, Mauriana, Brittney, Abby, and Julie; sisters in law, Pat and Katy; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald and Robert.
During his childhood, his family relocated frequently, living in Byers, Frederick, and Denver, CO; Martin, SD; Bozeman, MT; and eventually Steamboat Springs, CO, where he graduated from high school in 1957. During high school, his passion for basketball and football led to the nickname 'Bear,' a reflection of his resilience, strength, and courage–qualities he carried with him throughout his life.
He earned an associate’s degree in criminal law, but his career was marked by a wide range of experiences. He worked in the gold, coal and uranium industries, specialized in lubrication systems, served as a police officer, and spent most of his life as a master mechanic. In addition to teaching lubrication systems at Great Basin College, he also had the unique opportunity to work as a lubrications consultant in Africa for a year. He took his skills with him wherever he went, living in several different places throughout his life, including Wyoming, Alaska, Colorado, Washington, Nevada, and Idaho. At every stage of his life, no matter where he was, he always found opportunities to teach and share his knowledge with others.
John’s hobbies included woodworking, golfing, boating, fishing, restoring classic cars, and tackling any repair project that needed attention. Animals always held a special place in his heart, and there wasn’t a dog he met that didn’t quickly become his friend. One of his greatest joys was being an active part of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He never missed a sporting event or school activity, always in the front row, cheering them on with pride. He built trophy cases, clipped newspaper articles, and proudly shared his family’s accomplishments with everyone he knew.
He was no stranger to grease-stained clothes and calloused hands. He will always be remembered for his relentless work ethic, sharp intellect, and remarkable ability to solve any problem that came his way. His passion for working with his hands was only surpassed by his devotion to his family, to whom he gave unwavering pride and support throughout his life.
The family wishes to thank all those who have offered their love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. Though John will be greatly missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. No formal services will be held at this time.
